3 Pest Protection Tips You Can Do at Home

No matter what type of pest problems you have, you're probably wondering what you can do to keep your Baton Rouge home pest-free today. You might be interested in discovering the simple things you can do to protect your home from all kinds of pests, including spiders, rodents, flies, cockroaches, beetles, centipedes, ants, and other pests.

Keep in mind that severe infestations may require professional help, but all of these solutions will help no matter what you choose to do.

Control Pests with these DIY Tips

1. Get Rid of Attractants

Yard Upkeep

The outside of your home can be an excellent place for a pest to hunker down. Clear away fallen debris, branches, leaves, and fruit or vegetables. It is especially important to do this in the fall.

Also, be sure to clean up any dog poop as well, as this can attract house flies, especially during the warmer months.

Place garbage bins, firewood piles, and composting at least 20 feet from your house to stop attractants from leading pests inside.

Food, water, and shelter are all the motivations pests require to enter your home. Place all your food items, especially pet food, in sealed plastic containers.

Sanitation is the best way to keep pests from staying, so establish a cleaning regimen. Clean all your drains regularly, especially the kitchen or shower drains, to keep fruit flies or drain flies from coming.

Consider purchasing an automatic vacuum system that can run quietly at night to keep rodents, cockroaches, or other nocturnal pests from roaming around.

2. Seal Common Entry Points

Yard and Garden

Many wildlife pests can enter the yard so that you can make your fencing around your flower beds and garden. Purchase steel fencing with 10-gauge, ¼ inch screening, and install it around potential places raccoons or other pests could access.

Install this fencing around your firewood and compost piles to prevent raccoons, rodents, squirrels, and other pests from accessing them. Never reach into a firewood pile without gloves, as spiders are known to make nests in the spaces between the wood.

You can also partially bury the fencing to prevent certain kinds of burrowing pests from entering your yard and garden. Row covers are also available to protect gardens from some pests.

Home Entry Points

Use silicone caulking, steel screening, and copper wire mesh to block the entry points in your home. It isn't possible to find all the possible entry points for some kinds of pests. Cockroaches, for example, are incredibly adept at locating entry points and squeezing themselves inside.

Here are a few essential locations:

  • Gaps around doors and windows
  • Ground-level home entry points, like cellar doors or window wells
  • Gaps around utility pipes
  • Large gaps in siding
  • Holes in brick chimneys or brick siding
  • Cracks and crevices in foundations and sill plates

3. Additional Tips and Products

Boric acid is an excellent way to get rid of anything with an exoskeleton. It is a common ingredient in many household cleaning products, including some detergents.

Purchase boric acid in a powder form from your local hardware or garden supply store. Be careful how and where you apply it because it can be harmful to children and pets if inhaled or ingested.

Diatomaceous earth cuts the waxy cuticle on most arthropods that allows them to retain water. When you apply this as dry dust in areas where you find ants, cockroaches, or other arthropods, it will cut the wax and dehydrate them.

There are also traps and baits available for nearly any pest. However, live rodent traps and unprotected rodent baits are not recommended because they should only be used by a professional.

Other things you can do include mixing soap and water in a spray bottle, which will create a spray you can use to kill any arthropod almost instantly.

Peppermint and Eucalyptus essential oils are known to repel spiders, and peppermint can also repel rats, who hate its smell. Consider purchasing an essential oil humidifier and keeping it in areas rats and spiders like to hide, such as attics, basements, and storage areas.

You can also release the natural enemies of many pests, including ladybugs and green lacewing, which eat pests like aphids, scale, mealybugs, and other pests.

Chemical pesticides have built a bad reputation because of their misuse during the previous century. Manufacturers today are sure to keep pesticides labeled correctly so that a consumer or company knows precisely how to use it properly.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
