3 Signs of Bed Bugs in Your Home

If you're wondering how to keep your family safe from a bed bug problem, this is the place to find what you need. It's always best to be as prepared as you can be, just in case. We've put together the tips and tricks you'll need to check for bed bug infestations in your Baton Rouge home. Bed bugs can be a nightmarish problem to have, so it's vital to identify them early before they get out of hand.

You could say that bed bugs are contagious in their own way, so always check for signs of them in hotel rooms or other places you spend the night. You'll want to avoid them creeping up on you at night in your Baton Rouge home.

Things You Should Know About Bed Bugs

Bed Bug Bites | As terrifying as the idea of bed bugs is, there is minimal possibility of actual danger because bed bugs don't carry diseases. That doesn't change the fact that an infestation is terrifying for plenty of people.

But it's important to remember that mosquitoes, which most people easily dismiss, carry plenty of life-altering diseases that appear on the news. The most dangerous problem a bed bug could cause is an allergic reaction, but the majority of victims don't experience any reactions at all.

Identification Errors | Just a quick warning for you: if you wake up with bites, don't jump to any conclusions about whether bed bugs caused them or not. Plenty of other insect bites look precisely the same, including mosquito bites and even spider bites. The only thing you can be sure of when you wake up with bites, whether they're itchy or not, is that there are pests in your house and that you can take action now.

Nocturnal Behavior | There is a common misconception out there that because bed bugs are nocturnal, they won't come out at night if the lights are on, but this is entirely false. Sometimes these insects hide on or near your bed, so travel isn't significant, and they're even known to travel up to 20 feet to find a blood meal. The best thing you can do at night is sleep.

Bed Bug Description

Bed bugs are brown, flat, and oval with ribbed abdomens. Since their considered “true bugs,” they have six legs and two antennae. They don't usually grow more than ¼ inch long, and females are larger than males. When they feed, they grow a reddish-brown color and swell up like a balloon after feeding on humans.

Finding Bed Bug Signs

1. Egg Casings and Molted Exoskeletons

Eggs can be about one millimeter in length and usually have a white or off-white color. Females will wander around a room and lay them as they travel. An egg takes two weeks or less to hatch and becomes a reproductive in about five weeks.

2. Excrement

Bed bug feces look something like little dots of black pepper that they deposit in their favorite hiding spots (details on hiding places below). These bugs spend most of their time hiding and only come out after midnight until about 5 am, so hiding spots will be riddled entirely with their evidence and shouldn't be too difficult to find.

3. Red Stains on Bed Sheets

During one out of every five feedings, bed bugs will void the remainder of their last feeding session on your sheets, and the spot they started feeding may bleed a little during the night. Bed bugs are attracted to carbon dioxide and heat, and when they find their host, they may pierce a couple of places before they find the right spot where they can feed.

Common Areas Bed Bugs Hide

Before you sleep in a new place or a motel or hotel, always check these areas for evidence of bed bug activity. Place your luggage in the bathroom or the hallway and ask for a new room or leave the location altogether if you find them. Use these tips to look for them in your own home as well, and contact a pest control company for positive identification and treatment.

Look in the seams of mattresses and box springs and the cracks and crevices in furniture, including the cushions in chairs and couches. Curtain folds, drawer runners, bed frames, box springs, and corners of walls and ceilings are all common bed bug hiding places as well.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
