Spring Cleaning that Keeps Pests Away

Roaches, Ants, Spiders are just some of the pests that can nest inside your home during the winter. Our houses are the best places for insects to find refuge, no matter how clean or dirty the home is after the winter.

Add these tips to your spring cleaning efforts this season, and you’ll help protect your home from the pests that might try to come knocking. As we transition from winter to spring, many pests will come out of nowhere. These spring cleaning tips could save you headaches from pests like ants, cockroaches, and spiders.

h2>Kitchen

Kitchens are prime places for ants and cockroaches, among many other pests. Full of food, water, and shelter, your kitchen is the perfect temperature-controlled paradise for any pest. Follow these steps during your spring cleaning efforts to keep ants and cockroaches away.

Look through the food cupboards and pantry for signs of ants, such as ant trails. Clean out any food that is expired or spoiled. Thoroughly clean the shelves and replace the shelf cloth or sheet.

Check under and behind the fridge and stove and around the dishwater for signs of pest activity, including feces, nests, or trails. Clean out dust, oil, and other grime to prevent ants or other pests from finding hiding places. Make sure none of these areas have any water leakages, especially around the dishwasher, as this could attract ants and other pests and eventually damage your home.

In and around the sink, thoroughly clean away any food scraps or leftover food grime. Using a drain cleaner that you can purchase online or from a local hardware store, wash away any food waste that might be left behind in the garbage disposal.

In and around the cupboard under the sink, check thoroughly for any signs of water leakages or water damage. Remove any items stored there. If you store cleaning chemicals or soaps under the sink, inspect the sink cupboard for any soap stains or leaks from other cleaning chemicals. Any damage to your home could be another hiding spot for ants or other pests.

Keep cockroaches out of the kitchen by cleaning even the most inaccessible cracks and crevices in your home. Roaches, especially German cockroaches, like to stay hidden under or behind appliances like the refrigerator or stove. They can also squeeze themselves under baseboards. Like other species of cockroach, German roaches hate to come out in the open, so if you see one scuttling around the house, chances are good you have a major infestation.

Keep both ants and cockroaches out of the kitchen by reducing things that might attract them. Place your food in airtight containers, including pet food, which will prevent them from finding and contaminating it. Reduce clutter in the pantry and cupboards, which will provide hiding places and possible food sources both ants and cockroaches.

Bathroom

Clean thoroughly behind and around the toilet, looking for any water leakage as well. The toilet should seal well against the floor, so block any cracks in the toilet base if you find any.

Clean the sink, countertops, and vanity. Be particularly careful to wash away any fallen hair, as cockroaches can and will eat bits of hair if they find it. Use a drain cleaner that you can get from online or in the hardware store, and check the sink cabinet for any leakages. If you keep any cleaning chemicals or soaps in the sink, remove everything from the sink cabinet and clean it thoroughly. Any damages should be fixed right away.

Scrub the shower and tub as well. Use a drain cleaner in the shower or tub drain to get rid of any hair or other substance that clogs the drain. Cockroaches, flies, and other pests can use clogged drains as food sources. Gross, but true.

Cockroaches like to hide in cracks and crevices, but they also need water to survive for more than a few weeks. The bathroom and around sinks is the perfect place for them to find hiding places and water sources. Thorough cleaning will prevent them from establishing hiding spots.

Basement

Spiders and rodents are some of the most common pests that will set up shop in the basement. Cool in the summer and usually dark year round, basements provide many pests everything they need to make a comfortable home.

Clutter in basements is one of the biggest reasons pests enjoy living in the basement. Storage areas should be orderly and free of clutter. Try not to use cardboard boxes for storage containers, as these are excellent places for spiders to spin their webs. Not only will plastic last longer, but plastic containers with secure lids are less likely to harbor spiders and other pests.

If you have spiders in your home or basement, chances are good that you have other pests living there as well. Spiders don’t live anywhere they can’t get a few insects caught in their webs. You might consider calling a professional to reduce the pest problem in the house, or you can follow these simple steps.

To get rid of spiders, knock down their webs using a duster. Then do your best to get rid of other insects and pests. You can use over the counter products like diatomaceous earth and insecticide soap. However, if you have done all you can to get rid of pests in your basement and they keep coming back, it could be time to get professional help.

Outside

The outside of the house has many places that are prime attractants for spiders, ants, cockroaches, and many other pests. A little spring cleaning could go a long way to protect your home.

Gutters are great places for ants and other pests to start an infestation. Leaves, dirt, and other debris provide ideal conditions for ants, termites, beetles, and many other insects.

Rake your mulch beds to make sure there are no damp spots and that the mulch isn’t too deep. Deep spots can attract termites, ants, and other pests, especially if the mulch is damp.

Trim the grass two feet from the foundation to prevent fleas, ticks, spiders, and other pests from finding hiding places there.

Seal cracks and crevices to block common pest entry points. Check for gaps around utility and A/C pipes, cracks around doors and windows, large gaps in the siding, and crevices or cracks around the foundation.

Window wells should be cleared of any debris. Spiders especially like to hide down window wells and spin webs. Consider placing a ribbed net over window wells to prevent pests from entering but that can also be easily removed in case of emergency.

Bushes, trees, and shrubs around the house, especially the perimeter of the home, should be at least one foot from the siding and two feet from each other. Trim tree branches that overhang above the roof or come too close to the siding.

Professional Pest Control

While these methods can help you while you clean for spring, sometimes it simply isn’t enough to get rid of certain pest infestations. Some ant colonies are too big, some cockroaches too clever at hiding, and some spiders just keep coming back.
